7 Common Dryer Issues and How to Fix Them

A broken dryer disrupts your daily routine quickly. From clothes staying damp after a full cycle to strange screeching sounds coming from the drum, appliance problems are a major inconvenience. Fortunately, many common dryer issues stem from simple component wear or airflow blockages that you can diagnose yourself.

Understanding what causes these seven common dryer problems will help you troubleshoot effectively and know when it is time to call in a professional.

Quick Troubleshooting Summary

Symptoms Most Likely Causes Primary DIY Fixes
Won't Start Tripped breaker, blown thermal fuse, faulty door switch, broken start switch. Reset breaker, test door switch and thermal fuse for continuity with a multimeter.
Won't Heat Burnt heating element, bad thermostat, failed gas igniter. Inspect coils for breaks, test thermostats and igniters for electrical continuity.
Drum Not Turning Snapped drive belt, worn drum rollers, stuck idler pulley, dead motor. Inspect belt tension, spin drum rollers by hand, check idler pulley movement.
Overheating Clogged exhaust duct, dirty lint filter, failed high-limit thermostat. Clear ductwork blockages, wash lint screen, test thermal cut-off switches.
Unusual Noises Worn roller bearings, damaged idler pulley, loose baffles, stray objects. Tighten internal baffles, clear coins from blower wheel, swap worn rollers.
Takes Too Long Restricted vent airflow, overloaded drum, failing heat element. Clear outside wall vent, reduce load size, clean fabric softener film off screen.
Burning Smells Built-up lint near heater, frayed rubber belt, shorted wiring. Clean internal lint buildup immediately, inspect drive belt for friction wear.

Detailed Guide: 7 Dryer Problems and Solutions

1. Dryer Will Not Start

When your dryer refuses to turn on, the issue is usually tied to the power supply or an active safety switch.

  • Power Supply: Make sure the power cord is firmly plugged in. Check your home’s breaker panel for tripped breakers or blown fuses.
  • Door Switch: The machine will not run if the door switch fails to register that the door is latching properly. Open the door, press the switch manually, and listen for a click. If you do not hear a click, test the switch for continuity using a multimeter and replace it if it fails.
  • Thermal Fuse: This safety component blows to shut down power if the unit overheats. Locate the fuse near the exhaust housing and test it for continuity. If it shows no continuity, it must be replaced.
  • Start Switch: Test the physical push-to-start switch on the control panel with a multimeter to verify it is sending a signal to the motor.

2. Dryer Will Not Heat

If your dryer tumbles normally but leaves clothes cold and damp, the heat generation system needs attention.

  • Heating Element (Electric Dryers): Check the heating element coils for visible breaks, dark burn spots, or sagging wire. Test for continuity with a multimeter.
  • Thermostats: Test both the cycling thermostat and the high-limit thermostat for continuity. A faulty thermostat prevents the heating circuit from engaging.
  • Gas Igniter (Gas Dryers): For gas models, inspect the igniter near the burner assembly for cracks. If the igniter does not glow or fails a continuity test, your gas burner will not ignite.

3. Dryer Drum Will Not Turn

If the motor hums but the drum stays still, the drive mechanism is slipping or jammed.

  • Drive Belt: Disconnect power and check the rubber belt wrapping around the drum. If the belt is snapped, cracked, or loose, install a new drive belt.
  • Drum Rollers: Support rollers hold the drum in place as it spins. Remove the drum and spin each roller by hand. Replace any rollers that wobble or refuse to spin smoothly.
  • Idler Pulley: The idler pulley keeps tension on the drive belt. Check that the pulley wheel spins freely without sticking.
  • Drive Motor: If the motor makes a heavy grinding noise or fails a continuity check, it requires professional replacement.

4. Dryer Overheating

An overheating dryer is a serious fire hazard that requires immediate attention.

  • Blocked Ventilation: Lint buildup inside your exhaust hose traps hot air inside the drum. Disconnect the vent pipe and clear all blockages leading out to your exterior wall vent.
  • Clogged Lint Screen: Clean your lint filter before every load. Scrub the mesh monthly with warm water and a soft brush to remove clear wax residue left behind by dryer sheets.
  • Thermal Cut-Off Switch: Test the high-limit thermostat and thermal cut-off switch near the heater housing. Replace any switch that fails a continuity check.

5. Dryer Making Unusual Noises

Different sounds point to specific component failures inside the cabinet:

  • Thumping or Squealing: Worn drum support rollers or flattened roller bearings cause rhythmic thumping or high-pitched squealing while tumbling.
  • Squeaking or Rattling: A worn idler pulley wheel or loose drive belt produces squeaking sounds.
  • Loud Clunking: Inspect the plastic baffles inside the drum. Tighten any loose mounting screws or replace cracked baffles.
  • Clicking or Grinding: Check the blower wheel housing for trapped coins, buttons, or loose hardware.

6. Dryer Taking Too Long to Dry

If a standard load requires multiple cycles to dry completely, airflow or heat output is restricted.

  • Airflow Restrictions: Clean the entire exhaust duct path from the back of the cabinet to the outside exit cap.
  • Overloading: Avoid stuffing the drum past two-thirds capacity. Clothes need space to tumble and allow warm air to circulate.
  • Failing Heating Element: A partially damaged heating element may produce low heat without failing entirely, resulting in long cycle times.

7. Dryer Emitting a Burning Smell

Never ignore a burning odor coming from your laundry room.

  • Lint Buildup: Trapped lint touching the heating element is the most common cause of burning smells. Disconnect power and vacuum out the heater housing and cabinet interior.
  • Frayed Drive Belt: A slipping belt rubbing against a stuck pulley creates a distinct burning rubber smell. Replace the belt immediately.
  • Electrical Damage: Scorched internal wiring or failing motor windings produce a sharp electrical odor. Shut off power to the unit right away.

Final Thoughts

Routine care like cleaning your lint filter, clearing exhaust ducts, and avoiding heavy overloads prevents most major dryer breakdowns. Knowing how to test components like thermal fuses, door switches, and drive belts allows you to handle minor repairs on your own safely. When a problem involves gas supply lines, complex wiring, or complete motor replacements, calling a qualified technician ensures your machine is repaired correctly.

Frequently Asked Questions

The most frequent causes are a tripped circuit breaker, a blown thermal fuse, or a damaged door switch that fails to signal that the door is closed.
In electric dryers, this is usually caused by a burned-out heating element or a tripped thermal limit switch. In gas dryers, a failed igniter or bad gas solenoid valve is typically to blame.
No. Turn off and unplug the appliance immediately. A burning smell indicates trapped lint near the heating element, a slipping rubber belt, or damaged electrical wiring, all of which pose fire risks.
You should inspect and clean your main dryer exhaust hose at least once a year. If you have a large family or run multiple loads daily, clean it every six months.
Yes. Restricted airflow prevents heat from escaping the dryer cabinet, causing temperatures to rise until the thermal safety fuse blows to prevent a fire.

These guys are great! We have a very old Maytag dryer that is still running. There were a couple of minor problems with it and they fixed it quickly. It wasn't cheap, but reasonable for prices these days. They arranged the proposal, I think it was $85 which goes toward the repair if you choose them. They came out saw the issue and ordered the parts then came as soon as the parts came in, about 3-4 days later and quickly repaired. the repair tech called before arriving and was very sweet and polite.

I recently had my oven repaired, and I couldn’t be happier with the service. From the moment I scheduled the appointment, the process was smooth and professional. Alex the technician arrived on time, quickly diagnosed the issue, and clearly explained what needed to be fixed before starting any work. The repair itself was completed efficiently, and the technician made sure everything was working perfectly before leaving. They also took the time to share a few maintenance tips to help prevent future problems, which I really appreciated. The pricing was fair, transparent, and exactly as quoted no surprises. My Wolf oven now heats evenly and works like new again. I highly recommend this appliance repair service to anyone needing fast, reliable, and professional oven repair.

My almost new Miele washer dies, family is slightly panicking, and I call the top referral on chatGBT, Zuta Appliance Repair, in Berkeley. They were quickly up to speed on the call, the woman was knowledgeable, got me scheduled easily, and answered all my questions without needing to be prompted, including pricing. Mark shows up on time, texted when he was a few minutes out, and from the very beginning I liked him, intelligent, friendly, and gave me great advice. He was clearly interested in saving me from unnecessary expenditure, and was very open to giving advice as to how I could trouble shoot it, offering to come back if necessary. Miele is a difficult company to deal with, and Mark was detailed in his instructions all of which made sense and were easy to follow. And here’s where Mark and the Zuta really showed themselves. I still needed help after trying to make the initial fixes, so, I'm calling for more help, more tech support, cause my family now needs laundry done, and instead of getting tired of me, they're answering texts and offering more help. I call the shop,...again, she remembers me by name, and the job, she's super friendly, tells me that Mark is going to be in touch, there are several back and forths, every time we talk she remembers me, and has all the details in mind. She clearly cares, follows through with everything she says, always when she said she would. Mark calls me, and walks me through the next phase of fixes. Mark's on long days, calling me on a Saturday, not trying to get off the phone, very positive, clearly cares, and his advise is solid and very clear. I can’t over emphasize how grateful I am to have him and the shop being so supportive, with my family looking at me,...big question marks in their eyes. This goes on for more than a week, Mark continues to call me when I’m needing advice and he’s even getting on the phone with Miele (1hr hold times average) and getting info for the fix that I’m trying to do, they're not charging me for all this, I’m stunned, I haven’t had this kind of interaction with a business since…. there were Pterodactyls flying the skies. So today, after work Mark calls me again, and this time I find the problem, texting him pics, and he’s looking at them and giving me a whole new slew of advice. Again, at no charge, by this point in the process I spent $85 total, for the initial service call. Zuta appliance is the best service experience I’ve had in years, I feel like paying them for the time they didn’t charge me, just on principle and good manners. I will never look for another appliance repair again, can’t overstate how much I recommend this shop.

Our dryer had been out of commission since before the holidays. I thought I would get around to trying to fiz it myself but it became clearer it wasn’t gonna happen. In the middle of disassembling and reassembling the whole house, it occurred to me that the ability to do laundry without having to dry everything on the line outside would probably be really helpful! I called Zuta, and they happened to have a same day opening due to a cancelation. Bo showed up, tested the unit to make sure it even needed to be fixed, and then went to work! With all the work we’re doing here, the working conditions were far from ideal, but Bo got it done with limited space to work with. I kid you not, the man is a master of his craft! All while being so incredibly friendly and professional. He gave me a lot of really helpful advice to take into account going forward, and left me with a machine running as good as new. If Zuta’s techs are all even half as awesome as Bo, I’ll happily call them the next time something comes up!

I dealt with Bo and he was amazing. Our dryer had been broken for weeks so he prioritized fixing it, going as far as to make an arrangement with another repairman to get the part we needed, You rule Bo!

We had a dishwasher stop working all of a sudden and had called Zuta to see if they could fix it. The scheduling was very easy and we had Mark as a technician assigned to us. He was very communicative on when he was arriving, he explained everything super thoroughly and came back after parts were ordered with instructions on how to maintain the dishwasher so it wouldn’t break again for the same reason. All in all super friendly and prompt and will definitely call these guys again for any issues!
