Why Does My Garbage Disposal Smell Bad? Causes and Cleaning Tips

A smelly garbage disposal is one of those problems that people deal with in their kitchens every day. The smell could be sour, like eggs or it could be more, like sewage; often it has a special smell so its easy to know whats happening. Either way it’s usually not a deal; most of the time all you need to do is remove some old rotten pieces of food that stuck to the garbage disposal.

We fix kitchen appliances in the East Bay. Have seen our fair share of bad things taken out of garbage disposals over the years so here are the causes of the smells how to clean a garbage disposal using things you probably already have and how to tell when there might be a bigger issue.

Why Does My Garbage Disposal Smell?

Here are some of the things that garbage disposals do to help us. They shred the food, and they rinse the food down the drain. It seems easy enough. But in the process little bits of food escape and cling to the inside walls. Other pieces of food lodge themselves behind the rubber splash guard on top of the disposal. No one looks there to remove the gunk that has gotten lodged in there. Bacteria can then thrive in these warm, moist areas.

The other culprit is grease. This also sticks to the inside walls and keeps the odors trapped in the disposal. Think about how strong the smell from a pan of fried food can be when it is sitting on your stove. Now imagine that you have had that same smell clinging to the inside of your disposal for weeks. The worst time for this is around holidays when you are getting rid of extra food.

Common Causes of Garbage Disposal Smell

Not all smells start in the same place. These are the ones we see the most:

  • Food stuck on the walls and blades: Bits of meat, rice and veggies dry out and rot.
  • A gross splash guard: It’s wet all the time and gets slimy. Most people don’t know it can be scrubbed, or even pulled out.
  • Grease and oil: They cool down into a sticky film that traps odors.
  • A clog in the drain pipe: Water sits there and starts to stink.
  • The dishwasher drain hose: Lots of dishwashers drain into the disposal, so smells can travel.
  • A vent problem: If the plumbing can’t get air, sewer gas can come up the drain.
  • A tired old disposal: Dull blades or a weak motor don’t grind well, so food builds up faster.

What Your Garbage Disposal Smell Is Telling You

Different smells point to different problems. It’s not an exact science, but it gives you a head start.

Smell Likely Cause What to Try First
Sour or rotten food Food stuck in the chamber or under the splash guard Scrub the splash guard, then do ice and salt
Rotten eggs Food breaking down, or sewer gas from a drain or vent issue Clean the disposal, then check how the sink drains
Sewage Clogged drain line or blocked vent Look for slow draining and call a pro if it stays
Musty or moldy Mold on the splash guard Scrub with dish soap and a brush
Burning Motor overheating or something jammed in the blades Turn it off and unplug it right away

Stay Safe Before You Clean

Quick but important. There are blades in there, and they don’t care that it’s your hand. So:

  • Switch the disposal off at the wall switch
  • Unplug it under the sink. If it’s wired in, flip the breaker
  • Don’t stick your bare hand in. Use tongs or pliers
  • Get a flashlight. You’ll see more than you want to
  • Put on rubber gloves.

How to Get Rid of Garbage Disposal Smell Step by Step

You don’t need to buy anything special. Here’s the order we’d do it in.

  1. Pull out anything big: Shine the light in. See a bottle cap, a lemon seed pile or a chicken bone? Grab it with tongs.
  2. Scrub the splash guard: Old toothbrush, dish soap, top and bottom. Honestly, this fixes the smell more often than anything else on the list.
  3. Run ice and salt: Put in about two cups of ice and half a cup of rock salt. Turn on cold water, then run the disposal for around 30 seconds. It sounds awful, but it works. The ice scrapes the walls clean.
  4. Do baking soda and vinegar: Pour in half a cup of baking soda, then a cup of white vinegar. It fizzes up. Let it sit about 10 minutes, then flush with hot water.
  5. Finish with citrus: Drop in a few lemon or orange peels and run it with cold water. Quick heads up, citrus doesn’t really clean anything. It just makes the sink smell better.
  6. Rinse it all out: Run cold water for another 30 seconds.

One more thing. Don’t mix bleach with vinegar or ammonia. The fumes are bad news. The simple stuff above is enough.

Why Does My Garbage Disposal Smell Even After Cleaning?

This one drives people nuts. You scrub, you grind ice, it smells fine for a day, and then boom, it’s back. If that’s you, the problem probably isn’t inside the disposal. A half clogged drain pipe can hold dirty water that keeps stinking, even when the disposal is spotless. A bad vent can do it too.

Check your dishwasher as well. If it drains through the disposal and the hose is full of gunk, the smell shows up in both places. If your dishwasher smells funny, our post on cleaning and maintaining your dishwasher can help. Fix one and the other often gets better.

What Not to Put Down the Garbage Disposal

A lot of smells start with what we toss in. Try to keep these out:

  • Grease, oil and fat: They harden and coat everything
  • Coffee grounds: They turn into thick sludge
  • Pasta, rice and potato peels: They swell up and get pasty
  • Bones and fruit pits: Too hard to grind well
  • Stringy veggies like celery and corn husks: The strings wrap around the blades
  • Chemical drain cleaners: They can hurt rubber parts and old pipes

How Often Should You Clean a Garbage Disposal?

Every week or two is plenty for most homes. If you cook a lot, go weekly. You don’t have to do the full routine every time, either. Some weeks ice and salt is all it needs. And a few small habits help in between:

  • Run cold water while you use it, then keep it running for 15 to 30 seconds after
  • Cut big scraps into smaller bits first
  • Wipe the splash guard when you do the dishes
  • Scrape greasy plates into the trash, not the sink
  • Toss in citrus peels once in a while

When to Call a Professional

Sometimes it’s not a cleaning problem at all. If you’ve cleaned it twice and it still stinks, there’s likely something else going on. Other clues are slow draining, loud grinding, a leak under the sink, or a disposal that hums but won’t spin. Those usually mean a clog or a part that’s wearing out.

Fixing a jammed or leaking disposal on your own gets risky fast. There are sharp parts and electrical wiring in there. A tech who does garbage disposal repair can find the real cause and tell you if it’s worth fixing or time to replace it. And a bit of preventative maintenance on your kitchen appliances can catch small stuff before it turns into a smelly mess.

Time to Get Your Kitchen Smelling Normal Again

Most of the time, a stinky disposal is just old food, grease and water sitting where you can’t see it. Scrub the splash guard, run ice and salt, then do the baking soda and vinegar. That fixes it in most homes. After that, rinse well and be careful about what goes down the drain, and the smell shouldn’t come back.

If it does keep coming back, the problem is probably in the drain, the dishwasher hose or the disposal itself. We serve Berkeley, Oakland and the rest of the East Bay. You can call Zuta Appliance Repair at (415) 592-4633 or visit us online.

Frequently Asked Questions

Usually it's food rotting inside, which gives off a sulfur smell. Sewer gas smells similar, and that can mean a drain or vent problem. Clean the disposal first. If the smell is still there a day or two later, get the drain checked.
That smell usually comes from past the disposal. A clogged drain line or a blocked vent are the common reasons. Cleaning the chamber won't fix either one. If the sink also drains slowly or gurgles, that's a strong hint it's a drain issue.
Scrub the splash guard with dish soap. Then run two cups of ice and half a cup of rock salt with cold water. Finish with baking soda and vinegar. It takes about 20 minutes and handles most food smells.
Every week or two works for most people. If you use it a lot, do it weekly. Wiping the splash guard while you wash dishes helps too.
Yes, sometimes. A burning smell often means the motor is overheating or something is stuck in the blades. A smell along with leaks, grinding or slow draining also points to a bigger problem. Turn it off and have it looked at.

These guys are great! We have a very old Maytag dryer that is still running. There were a couple of minor problems with it and they fixed it quickly. It wasn't cheap, but reasonable for prices these days. They arranged the proposal, I think it was $85 which goes toward the repair if you choose them. They came out saw the issue and ordered the parts then came as soon as the parts came in, about 3-4 days later and quickly repaired. the repair tech called before arriving and was very sweet and polite.

I recently had my oven repaired, and I couldn’t be happier with the service. From the moment I scheduled the appointment, the process was smooth and professional. Alex the technician arrived on time, quickly diagnosed the issue, and clearly explained what needed to be fixed before starting any work. The repair itself was completed efficiently, and the technician made sure everything was working perfectly before leaving. They also took the time to share a few maintenance tips to help prevent future problems, which I really appreciated. The pricing was fair, transparent, and exactly as quoted no surprises. My Wolf oven now heats evenly and works like new again. I highly recommend this appliance repair service to anyone needing fast, reliable, and professional oven repair.

I had an excellent experience with Alex the technician who repaired my Sub-Zero refrigerator. The fridge had stopped cooling properly, and I was worried about losing all the food inside, but the service team responded quickly and scheduled an appointment right away. The technician arrived on time, was very professional, and clearly knew Sub-Zero systems inside and out. They quickly identified the problem, explained the repair process in simple terms, and completed the work efficiently. After the repair, they carefully tested everything to make sure the refrigerator was cooling perfectly before leaving. What impressed me most was the attention to detail, honest pricing, and the care taken to keep the work area clean. My refrigerator is now running like new, and I feel confident calling them again for any future appliance repairs. My almost new Miele washer dies, family is slightly panicking, and I call the top referral on chatGBT, Zuta Appliance Repair, in Berkeley. They were quickly up to speed on the call, the woman was knowledgeable, got me scheduled easily, and answered all my questions without needing to be prompted, including pricing. Mark shows up on time, texted when he was a few minutes out, and from the very beginning I liked him, intelligent, friendly, and gave me great advice. He was clearly interested in saving me from unnecessary expenditure, and was very open to giving advice as to how I could trouble shoot it, offering to come back if necessary. Miele is a difficult company to deal with, and Mark was detailed in his instructions all of which made sense and were easy to follow. And here’s where Mark and the Zuta really showed themselves. I still needed help after trying to make the initial fixes, so, I'm calling for more help, more tech support, cause my family now needs laundry done, and instead of getting tired of me, they're answering texts and offering more help. I call the shop,...again, she remembers me by name, and the job, she's super friendly, tells me that Mark is going to be in touch, there are several back and forths, every time we talk she remembers me, and has all the details in mind. She clearly cares, follows through with everything she says, always when she said she would. Mark calls me, and walks me through the next phase of fixes. Mark's on long days, calling me on a Saturday, not trying to get off the phone, very positive, clearly cares, and his advise is solid and very clear. I can’t over emphasize how grateful I am to have him and the shop being so supportive, with my family looking at me,...big question marks in their eyes. This goes on for more than a week, Mark continues to call me when I’m needing advice and he’s even getting on the phone with Miele (1hr hold times average) and getting info for the fix that I’m trying to do, they're not charging me for all this, I’m stunned, I haven’t had this kind of interaction with a business since…. there were Pterodactyls flying the skies. So today, after work Mark calls me again, and this time I find the problem, texting him pics, and he’s looking at them and giving me a whole new slew of advice. Again, at no charge, by this point in the process I spent $85 total, for the initial service call. Zuta appliance is the best service experience I’ve had in years, I feel like paying them for the time they didn’t charge me, just on principle and good manners. I will never look for another appliance repair again, can’t overstate how much I recommend this shop.

Our dryer had been out of commission since before the holidays. I thought I would get around to trying to fiz it myself but it became clearer it wasn’t gonna happen. In the middle of disassembling and reassembling the whole house, it occurred to me that the ability to do laundry without having to dry everything on the line outside would probably be really helpful! I called Zuta, and they happened to have a same day opening due to a cancelation. Bo showed up, tested the unit to make sure it even needed to be fixed, and then went to work! With all the work we’re doing here, the working conditions were far from ideal, but Bo got it done with limited space to work with. I kid you not, the man is a master of his craft! All while being so incredibly friendly and professional. He gave me a lot of really helpful advice to take into account going forward, and left me with a machine running as good as new. If Zuta’s techs are all even half as awesome as Bo, I’ll happily call them the next time something comes up!

I dealt with Bo and he was amazing. Our dryer had been broken for weeks so he prioritized fixing it, going as far as to make an arrangement with another repairman to get the part we needed, You rule Bo!

We had a dishwasher stop working all of a sudden and had called Zuta to see if they could fix it. The scheduling was very easy and we had Mark as a technician assigned to us. He was very communicative on when he was arriving, he explained everything super thoroughly and came back after parts were ordered with instructions on how to maintain the dishwasher so it wouldn’t break again for the same reason. All in all super friendly and prompt and will definitely call these guys again for any issues!
